Halloween throwback: 2012 Mario Kart costumes

Updated: Dec 27, 2018

In 2012, we hosted a video game themed Halloween party at our house. My husband (then boyfriend) and I decided to put together our own Mario Kart costumes in one weekend!

I had a floor-length pink dress left over from being a bridesmaid in my sister's wedding years before. We sewed a few darker pink pieces onto it and voila! It's Princess Peach! I purchased a Peach-inspired crown and a Mario hat from Radiant Designs off Etsy and found a cheap blonde wig. My boyfriend's outfit we basically put together from some clothes he already had.

Then we made use of those Amazon boxes that sit around until you take the time to break them down for recycling. We purchased red, black, yellow, white and pink paint from a craft store and painted a sloppy version of some karts.

My favorite part, however, was using the white sheet we hung in the basement for our "green screen." We had some friends take photos of us and then I cut out the background and included Mario-inspired backgrounds behind us instead. It really made the colors pop!

You don't always have to go all-out if you want to put together a Halloween outfit. We certainly didn't spend much time (or money) on this idea but it was a big hit at the party. Dare I call these outfits cosplay? Sure! Why not.
